Chiropractic - What is it?

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine. It emphasises manual therapy including spinal manipulation and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation, and includes exercises, and health and lifestyle counselling.

We believe that true health will occur when your body works and performs as it was designed to - aches and pains are symptoms that suggest your body is not working correctly. Chiropractors can provide care and support for you when you need it most.

After five years of study, licensing examinations and continuing education seminars, Chiropractors in the United Kingdom are at the top of their game, using proven techniques and natural methods to help you get well and stay well.

Chiropractic is a fast-growing independent health care profession; in fact it is the largest primary healthcare profession in the world behind medicine and dentistry. Chiropractors provide care for patients of all ages, who present with a range of acute and chronic conditions.

Treatment consists of a wide range of techniques designed to improve the function of the joints throughout the body, relieving pain and muscle spasm. Take a look at our "Chiropractic Techniques" page to learn more about the techniques we use here at Berkhamsted Chiropractic Clinic (BCC).

Written records from the ancient Greek and Chinese civilizations, dating back several thousand years, refer to spinal manipulation. The inception of modern chiropractic can be traced back to 1895 when Canadian Daniel David Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment and went on to found The Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 1897. Paul Jay opened Berkhamsted Chiropractic Clinic in 1931 to firmly set its place in the history of bringing Chiropractic to the UK.

The 20th century saw the growth and development of the profession worldwide, gaining recognition and respect for the place it has taken in the primary care environment. Influential research has underpinned the development of the profession and has come both from both within and outside of the chiropractic research communities.
