Homeopathy & Kinesiology: Focus on Exam Stress

Homeopathy & Kinesiology Exam Stress

Berkhamsted teenagers suffering from exam stress are seeking “alternative” help in the form of homeopathy. Homeopathic medicine may help calm exam nerves and deal with symptoms such as headaches, insomnia and digestive upsets.

Registered homeopath Patricia Wassall who runs a clinic in the Berkhamsted Chiropractic Clinic, explains: “A carefully chosen homeopathic medicine matched to the individual patient may help with the mental, emotional and physical symptoms of stress, by triggering the body’s natural system of healing. It’s a holistic approach, witheach prescription based on the individual patient’s experience of their illness.”

EATING FOR EXAM SUCCESS:
Fuelling the brain properly is key for concentration, mood and energy:

• Eat 3 meals & 2-3 snacks a day.
• Try to eat something every 3 hrs.
• Eat breakfast and have a small snack before bed.
• Have some protein with each meal or snack: meat, fish, eggs, nuts, tofu.
• Avoid biscuits, cakes, sugary snacks and drinks,; they destroy your concentration.
• Eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit for essential vitamins and minerals.

FISH OIL REDUCES INFLAMMATION AND ANXIETY IN STUDENTS

Scientists have shown that taking fish oil blunts the activation of adrenal hormones that usually occurs as a response to mental stress. When you are stressed, your adrenal glands release adrenaline and noradrenaline, which increase heartbeat and direct energy and resources away from activities such as digestion, and towards your heart and the muscles in your arms and legs. The adrenals glands also release cortisol as part of your stress response, which is involved in blood sugar control, blood pressure regulation, immune responses and inflammation processes. Your body does not distinguish between different types of stress, so it will respond this
way whether you are being attacked by a lion, having a difficult day at work or studying for an exam.

Pro-longed over-stimulation of the adrenals can eventually contribute to adrenal fatigue. You may experience this as a plunge in energy, or find that you need continual stimulants (coffee, tea, sugar, chocolate, cigarettes etc.) to get you through the day. Or this may manifest as a chronic health condition where your body simply doesn’t have enough energy to make enzymes and other important substances to digest food, clear toxicity and resolve inflammation.

A randomised control trial on medical students in Ohio showed that students taking EPA/DHA supplements had anxiety scores that were 20% lower than those taking the placebo, along with lower levels of pro-inflammatory compounds. Mental stress has clear physical effects on the body, but it seems that those effects can be regulated with fish oil supplementation. Kinesiology can help identify an appropriate supplement for you.

Celebrity News: Former model Jo Wood, TV personality Gaby Roslin, actress Louise Jameson, former professional tennis player Annabel Croft and British Olympic sprinter James Ellington are convinced of the therapeutic value of homeopathy. These celebrities regularly use homeopathic medicines such as arnica, lavender, sulphur, bellis perennis and pulsatilla for the treatment of every day complaints such as bruising, tension headaches, menopause related symptoms, exertion and coughs.

Research
More high quality research is needed to test homeopathy further, but currently there are 15 conditions where homeopathy has been demonstrated to be clinically effective beyond either a placebo or active control. These are: allergies and upper respiratory tract infections, ankle sprain, bowel inactivity after surgery (post-operative ileus), bronchitis, childhood diarrhoea, chronic fatigue, ear infections (acute otitis media), fibromyalgia, flu, hay fever, osteoarthritis, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatic diseases, sinusitis and vertigo.

How do I find a qualified homeopath?
By choosing a homeopath registered with the Society of Homeopaths you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured. You can check whether a homeopath is registered with the SOH by searching the register at www.homeopathy-soh.org.
